The limit notation for horizontal asymptotes has an actual meaning. As we go to the right it will reach a certain number value. .As we go to the left it will approach some number value as well. These number values will be the horizontal asymptotes. Graphs will only be able to cross through the middle of asymptote but never to the right or left.
