1. How have you performed on the Unit O and P tests? What evidence do you have from your work in the unit that supports your test grade (good or bad)? Be specific and include a minimum of three pieces of evidence.
RESPOND HERE:
On the Unit O test I received an 87% and on the Unit P test I received a 69%. For Unit O I worked on all the Practice Quizzes and the Practice test, which allowed me to understand the concept even more. On Unit P I did the Practice Quizzes to the extent of my understanding. I felt confident in my ability from what I had done. I tried to focus on the last two concepts of Unit P the most and on the Practice Test because I felt those where the most difficult. Unfortunately I did not manage to improve my speed in the drawing out of the problems, therefore affecting my ability on the test to draw the problems in a short amount of time and costing me time. The in class quizzes did help out a lot in both Units.
2. You are able to learn material in a variety of ways in Math Analysis. It generally follows this pattern:
→ Your initial source of information is generally the video lessons and SSS packets followed by a processing and reflection activity via the WSQ
→ individual supplemental research online or in the textbook before class
→ reviewing and accessing supplementary resources provided by Mrs. Kirch on the blog
→ discussion with classmates about key concepts
→ practice of math concepts through PQs
→ formatively assessing your progress through concept quizzes
→ cumulatively reviewing material through PTs
→ Final Assessment via Unit Test.
Talk through each of the steps given in the following terms:
a. How seriously do you take this step for your learning? What evidence do you have to support your claim? Make sure to make reference to all 8 steps.
b. How could you improve your focus and attention on this step to improve your mastery of the material? What specific next steps would this entail? Make sure to make reference to all 8 steps.
RESPOND HERE:
Learning is very important for me because if I don't grasp something, it will limit my success. When I watch a new video lessons I follow along with my SSS packet and write down what I see and what I think will be helpful. I could improve my focus and attention on this step by making sure to re watch the videos so the information stays fresh in my mind. I never really tried using supplemental resources or the textbook because I felt the videos where enough, I could try to do a little bit more research which would entail actually learning from the book itself. Although supplementary resources have been provided by Mrs. Kirch I have not used it to help my learning. I should start using these resources because they will help me master the concepts and allow me to learn more in depth. In class we have discussions about key concepts which I participate in as we're supposed to. I try to do my best in reviewing what we watched in the videos and asking question about anything I did not grasp. I could improve the discussion of the concept by actually working out some of the problems from the packet together to review as a group. The Practice Quizzes are so helpful when reviewing the concepts which is why I try my best to work out the problems and check my answers with the answer key. The concept quizzes are a good indicator on what I need to work on so it is important that I take them as soon as possible to see where I need help on. I could improve on this by taking the quizzes earlier than later. The Practice Test is the perfect indicator if you know the material or if you need to review it. When I do the practice test and check my answers and if I miss a problem, I try to see how it was worked out and re-try it on my own to learn. When taking the Unit Test I feel that I should work harder because I take too long on every problem making sure it is correct. This limits my time which causes me to rush and make simple mistakes that cost me points. I could do well to improve my confidence in the material so I will be able to finish on time and won't rush through the test.
3. Reflect on your learning this year thus far by considering the following questions:
a. How confident do you generally feel on the day of a Unit Test? Give evidence and specifics to back up your answer.
b. How well do you feel you have learned the math material this year as compared to your previous years in math? Give evidence to support your claim.
c. How DEEPLY do you feel you have learned the math material this year as compared to your previous years in math? Give evidence to support your claim.
d. Do you normally feel like you understand the WHY behind the math and not just the WHAT/HOW? Meaning, do you understand why things work, how they are connected to each other, etc, and not just the procedures? Explain your answer in detail and cite specific evidence from this year.
e. How does your work ethic relate to your performance and success? What is the value of work ethic in real life?
RESPOND HERE:
a) On the day of the test my confidence is high. I feel have learned the concepts of the Unit well enough to pass. After using the practice quizzes and the Practice Test they indicate that I understand the concepts. The quizzes we take in class also boost my confidence if I score perfects on them as they help me measure my understanding and indicate how well I will do on the test.
b) Compared to my previous years in math I feel I have learned the math material better. My evidence would be the fact that I can workout the math material I learn in the videos and be able to use that for the whole Unit.
c) I feel I have learned the math material very deeply as compared to previous years in math. The reason I say this is because no only am I able to understand the concepts but I am also able to explain them and show why they are what they are. I am able to make connections among the units.
d) I feel like I understand the why behind the math because I am able to connect the information from one unit to another previous unit. This allows me to be able to explains and understand why certain steps are taken in the solving of problems. For example in the current Unit of Q I was able to connect some of the concepts with work from previous Units such as M which uses Unit Circles and its values.
e) My work ethic in relation with my performance and success is crucial. If I do not work hard I will not be able to succeed when it comes time to take a Unit Test. Therefor a;though I work hard, there is always room for improvements as my past Test grades have shown me. I managed to score high on previous test but then scored low. This only motivates me to work harder and progress in math and my understanding of it.
